Humming To The Southern Indian Beats!
To the outside world, Indian music is synonymous with Bollywood music. But Indian music has more diversity than that.
Listing here some of the music forms from Southern India:
1. Carnatic Music
In the classical front, we have Carnatic Music. Most of the songs are in the southern Indian languages of Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. Some are also in Sanskrit. The musician from Karnataka, Purandara Dasa, is considered the father of Carnatic Music. The three greatest composers of Carnatic Music are Thyagaraja, Shyama Shastry and Muthu swami Dikshidhar. From the days of Thyagaraja till today, the tradition of music has been passed from generation to generation. Most of these are devotional in nature and are governed by Raagas and Thaalas.
2. Folk Songs
It is not the classical music alone. We have some really rustic folksongs in each region of India. Most of these folk songs are sung by local folk singers in their native tongue. Unlike the classical music which is mostly devotional in nature, folk songs are songs that deal with the everyday lives of ordinary peasants. Most of the folk songs are harvest songs. Also, all the local festivities and every day occurrences are expressed in these songs.
Here is a Kannada folk song related to harvest. This song is of the Halakki Vokkaliga tribe in Karnataka state.
There are many more folk songs native to each region of India.Though these are varied forms of music, it still binds people together because music touches the innermost regions of peoples' hearts. This post is an attempt to showcase the forms of music from southern Indian states and use it as a medium to unite hearts.
Happy Listening!
