The ultimate elixir of music!
Before I begin, let me confess, I am not an ardent music lover. My knowledge of music is too narrow and limited. However, much to the music’s reverence, I do acknowledge the importance of music in the sense that the musical performances have in the past brought the two nations of India and Pakistan closer. This is in great irony to the fact that when political dialogues failed, music came to the rescue.
Music, in particular, is the way of life that has bound everyone together and the one thing that has transcended boundaries. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that all of us despite the differences, bond over music and share the same sentiments. The musical journey remains incomplete if love is not felt, if the extremes of feelings are not attained, if the souls are left bereft of the compassion and admiration for the art. The art of music is not new to both the nations. In fact, music lies at the heart of discussions and discourses between the two nations in as much as it leads to the absolute and pristine state of ecstasy for both the nations. The soft power used by artists such as Ghulam Ali, Abeeda Parvin, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Kailash Kher have contributed greatly towards the strengthening of the cultural ties.
How has music helped? How will music help in order to bring the two nations even closer? How can the boundaries be obliterated in view of the playing symphonies in the background? If such questions are answered correctly, half of the issues between India and Pakistan will be resolved. Musical treatment of problems is based upon the assumption that Music is panacea to all forms of ailments. The audiences of both the nations remain grateful to the musicians of both the nations who perform and present the various diversified elements of music and spellbound the crowd. In this way, the nationals of both the nations have been exposed to different kinds of notes and music. Music is just not a recreation for them but also a medium of exchange of love and serenity. Peace building is another crucial characteristic feature of Music. Music improves the ties between the nations through cultural diplomacy. Roles played by non governmental actors are additionally of utmost importance in this respect.
Over the past few years, we have seen that several artists, performers, bands, have crossed the borders in large numbers to showcase their talents, leaving deep imprints in the minds of the masses. Music is not just a means to survive but is also an identity for them. It is further true to say that music is an extended arm of the entertainment industry and establishes translational relationship between the two cricketing nations. In depths of conflict and tussle, music provides respite to the insecure crowd thriving in despair. Further, music affects individuals deeply and harnesses the recreational factor to mitigate with any possibility of war and wrath. Music elicits an emotional response and connects people. Equally important is the fact that since, the two nations have shared history, customs, traditions, etc., music forms are common to some extent too. This gives a sense of togetherness too.
The noted significance of art and music has also supported the tourism sector. It is observed that there must be a long term strategy in place so as to create an international example for peace building through music. In this regard, the gesture is more than necessary, allowing such artists, performers unconditionally is the need of hour. Not only this, they should be treated with utmost respect. The broadcast of the Pakistani music shows in India and the Indian music in Pakistan is again a commendable effort. Likewise, formation of partnerships for concerts, releasing albums has again contributed in the whole peace building process. The role played by Radio broadcast cannot be overlooked again. Media’s role needs to be underlined and emphasized upon over and again. The communication medium can act as a great platform for spreading the word about the musical initiatives and other collaborations between India and Pakistan. However, the chaos associated should be dealt with carefully in view of the rights of these performers. Their rights should be upheld and respected. If the power of music prevails, not so far is the time when music will take over as the most relevant factor in shaping the relations between India and Pakistan. Amen!
